Texas A&M University - Aggie Park
Aggie Park was created to provide outdoor spaces for study and relaxation, tailgating,
entertainment, and recreation for A&M students and visitors. The park includes additional and enhanced tailgating space, water features, an outdoor amphitheater,
a performance pavilion, public Wi-Fi, media utilities, Alumni recognition, and improved
infrastructure.
Scope
Chamberlin’s scope consisted of two different roof systems. A flat roof with a single-ply system for the Ice Creamery and a copper flat panel roof for the Pavilion.
The Creamery roof was a standard GAF TPO Roof with a coverboard and R25 Insulation. The Pavilion is a more complex system that required our team to work on steep pitches and be 100%tied off at all times. The installation of the trim had challenges of its own. These consisted of an internal gutter that had to be soldered, conditions that
involved coordination with other trades, and ensuring that we installed all cooper trim and panels with minimal fingerprints and self-inflicted damage that would affect the quality of the product. At Chamberlin quality production, installation and service are
top priorities.
Local Community
Aggie Park is one of the largest philanthropic movements to date for Texas A&M University. Not only was the project fully funded by the Association of Former Students, but multiple renowned donations were made by various people and organizations. Not only was this done for the sole benefit of incoming, current, and future students to utilize on campus, but it also going to improve the atmosphere of events A&M hosts that Alumni and A&M fans visiting will also get to enjoy. With that, Texas A&M University was in need of an addition to its campus that would encourage bringing current students, visitors, and alumni together for sporting events, social gatherings, studying, relaxation, and more. Aggie Park now provides additional green space on campus that is functional, inspiring, and restorative. It will allow for outdoor study and student recreation and will provide space for reflection and renewal.
A new building within the park will provide needed improved space for Aggie Ring Day and other annual celebrations and events. When students have a designated place to unwind and be themselves outside of their busy class and work schedule, they are able to perform better in all those things. Texas A&M Foundation President and CEO Tyson Voelkel ’96 even stated, “Aggie Park is a space that recognizes the past, embraces the future, and helps enable the continued unique blend of Aggie values to thrive.”
Project Management
Chamberlin utilized PlanGrid on this particular project. PlanGrid is a tool Chamberlin values because it allows our project teams to collaborate effectively, smoothly manage project documentation, and communicate more effectively. Using PlanGrid provides these benefits not only to Chamberlin team members but also aids other members
of the construction team. The client received real-time updates and the team knew all were working with the most current information. This helped avoid mistakes and accurately install our systems on the project the first time. A PlanGrid feature that our team and client utilized for the duration of the project was the mobile accessibility allowing all to access the project documentation from anywhere. This gave all parties flexibility, enabling on-site workers to reference project documents and communicate with all team members involved, without the need for a desktop computer.
Challenges Overcome
Some significant challenges we faced during this project were all related to the Flat Seam Roof at the Pavilion. The steel structure was delayed by another trade working on this project, once it finally got done, we had to wait for the other trades to finish installing their key elements, like the plywood deck.
Once the plywood deck stage was installed, our team was presented with the challenge to be innovative and add insulation to the deck to level the substrate. If we had proceeded with our Copper panel installation without proper installation, we would have run the risk of the panels oil canning over time. A challenge many other subcontractors take for granted when working with copper. Implementing the utmost safety standards is important for us and did so by ensuring the deck wasn’t dangerous for planning to utilize it as a stage for concerts and other live events.
We were honored to have the opportunity to provide the manpower for the unique copper panel installation on the pavilion roof portion of the project. Copper panels are not a typical roof material for many. When everything was completed and fully installed, all parties included were excited to see the final product. The ice creamery was a smooth process for our field personnel. Our field personnel were able to start working and get the roof dried in within about a week. This portion of the project only took our team a couple of weeks to fully complete, without any major issues. Overall, what helped our Chamberlin Team avoid foreseen obstacles and to meet the scheduled completion date we had to have approximately twenty men on site working on our project scopes, three boom lifts to utilize, and we were out there working a total of seven days a week.
