Preparation is an important component of working safely. As a long-standing member of the Roofing Alliance and NRCA, Chamberlin Roofing & Waterproofing sets our employees up for success by ensuring they have the necessary skills and knowledge they need to do their job safely. This process begins with a new-hire comprehensive behavioral-based orientation training, where our safety culture, general jobsite safety awareness, and hazard recognition is taught. Each Chamberlin employee is certified in at least 10 hours of OSHA, First Aid, and CPR, and further equipment and project-specific training is available. Chamberlin begins each project by developing a site-specific safety plan and a Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) prior to job start-up. They cover each task on the job, potential hazards associated with those tasks, and how to prevent those hazards from causing an accident.
Hugo completed all of Chamberlin’s new-hire training when he came on board and has continued to further his safety training throughout his time with Chamberlin. He has a vast knowledge of the safety protection and equipment required for the different commercial roofing systems with which he works. He communicates Chamberlin’s and the general contractor’s safety expectations to his crew, as well as Chamberlin’s zero-tolerance policy for violating fall protection procedures. As a Superintendent, Hugo
takes the time to walk the many job sites he oversees before work begins, developing thorough JHAs and submitting it to a Chamberlin safety professional for review. He inspects all equipment and fall protection system components meticulously, down to checking every extension cord for shock hazard. He completes and submits daily equipment checklists to confirm proper functionality. He holds his crews accountable and has them thinking ahead and putting safety as a primary focus.
Another important component of safe practices is awareness. Hugo is conscious of
Forward thinking and planning ahead of time make for a more cohesive job site. Hugo and his crew utilize Safe Performance Self-Assessment (S.P.S.A.) to help reduce the risk of incidents on the job site. This is a process Chamberlin adopted to encourage all workers to stop and reflect before beginning any and all tasks and go through the following mental steps:
1. Assess the risk. What could go wrong? What is the worst outcome if something does go wrong?
2. Analyze how to reduce the risk. Do I have all the necessary training and knowledge to do this job safely? Do I have all the proper tools and PPE?
3. Act to ensure safe operations. Take the necessary action to ensure the job is done safely. Ask for assistance if needed.
Being proactive is a third component important to safe practices. When facing challenges, Hugo has demonstrated numerous times his ability to navigate and create working solutions to execute on a high level. He understands his crew’s strengths and weaknesses and is able to put them in the best position to succeed on the job site.
Ultimately, Hugo is prepared, aware, and proactive when it comes to safety. He is strongly committed to following safe practices at all times.
Hugo takes pride in all of his work, whether it is a 450,000 square foot roof installation or filling out paperwork. His drive for precision and accuracy in everything he does sets him apart from the rest. No task is too small to do it right the first time. From checking material orders for accuracy to sending daily reports of work progress, he is thorough. He excels at the large parts of his job just as he excels at the small parts.
In his 8+ years at Chamberlin, Hugo has been an effective Superintendent and has demonstrated strong communication and planning skills. He makes a habit of double-checking project specifications, analyzing the job, and looking ahead to what is in front of him. In doing so, he has caught oversights that could have cost everyone involved in the project time and money. His planning, combined with his experience, results in accurate and timely material orders. His crew always has the tools and equipment they need to get their job done. His vested interest in delivering a successful project is an invaluable asset to his crew, to Chamberlin, and to our clients.
Communication is key to a successful project. Everyone knows this, but not everyone executes it as well as Hugo Guerrero. He is not only thorough with his project documentation, but he keeps everyone in the loop at each turn. Working throughout the project with the Chamberlin operations team and the general contractor to lay out a solid installation plan helps Chamberlin meet production timelines. His communication fosters a team approach to problem-solving.
Hugo believes in getting the job done right the first time. One cannot take pride inwork that has to be done all over again because it wasn’t done properly. He checks his own work and his crews’ throughout the day to ensure everyone is producing the highest quality possible. From paperwork to the smallest application detail to a watertight seam, Hugo insists all tasks are done properly, and any discrepancies found are corrected immediately. He is regularly found grabbing his tools to demonstrate proper roofing techniques. Hugo dedicates numerous weekends to ensuring the projects are completed on time.
Hugo works alongside his crew, leading by example and also teaching and mentoring them along the way. He believes that empowering each member of the team with the skills and knowledge they need to get the job done makes for safe and productive projects. He believes that training, encouragement, and constructive feedback are key for growth and that growing as a team together assures our collective future success.
When Hugo and his family were faced with his sudden heart attack, many of his co-workers came together to show him appreciation in his time of need. Being a team player in the workplace is a huge part of how Hugo performs on a day-to-day basis, so when he wasn’t capable of being at work to lead everyone on his crew, they paid it forward by being there for him as a thank-you. Of course, this didn’t stop Hugo from trying to lead the project from his hospital bed.
Hugo went on to share that “Chamberlin is the best company I have ever worked for because they care for their employees and are there for you like family when you go through difficult times.” He shared that Chamberlin has helped him realize how important it is to care for others, which is why he consistently helps grow the team in any way he can to give back to those around him who need it.
Hugo is always ready to encourage potential employees on why they should join the Chamberlin team. He emphasizes Chamberlin’s values and how they are saturated throughout the entire company. The fact that there is always work to keep them busy and many opportunities for advancement are other tools he uses in recruiting. He knows building crews of quality people with honesty and integrity will support
his continued success and Chamberlin’s. We appreciate Hugo’s efforts in recruiting for Chamberlin, team building, and helping grow our workforce.
