Risks of Prolonged Sun Exposure
During these dog days of summer we give extra attention to preventative measures that can combat the risks of prolonged exposure to sun and heat. Heat illness is no joke and can even be fatal. Skin cancer is another potential hazard. According to the American Cancer Society, someone dies of Melanoma almost every hour. Be on the lookout for the ABCDs of skin cancer when inspecting any abnormal moles on your body.
Here’s the good news. As serious as these threats can be, taking precautions is pretty straightforward. Staying hydrated and covering your skin are the most important things you can do. Drink water every 15 minutes - even if you don’t feel thirsty. Wear light-colored UV protective clothing and plenty of sunscreen.
Feeling weak and nauseous? Have the chills and a headache? You might even be strangely giddy or faint. That’s heat exhaustion talking to your body.
As for a heat stroke, keep an eye on your colleagues. They may not even be aware of their symptoms because confusion, delirium and even anger are par for the course. Check to see if their pupils are dilated and if so, be prepared because convulsions could possibly be next. If you think someone you’re with is having a heat stroke, call an ambulance stat. While you wait for EMTs to arrive, soak the person’s clothes with water to cool their body temp. And here’s a tip not everyone knows: Don’t give them fluids to drink. It sounds counterintuitive, but it could make things worse.
Yes indeed, knowing these tips can come in handy. Take care of yourself out there.
