Chamberlin Roofing & Waterproofing was honored to receive a national Excellence in Construction® Eagle Award from Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) for their work on Project Delta, a corporate company just north of Houston.
Chamberlin’s role at Project Delta included installing approximately 600,000 square feet of traffic coating to the three parking garages in a very unique way. Instead of a traditional barren concrete roof, the owner desired a more aesthetically appealing approach that the tenants could enjoy for years to come.
The initial idea of the design was to simply paint the substrate, but there was an immediate concern because all proposed paints or coatings would fade to a certain degree. Chamberlin worked as a team member in an extensive mock-up and testing process to find the right polyurethane waterproof coating and color tint. In this case, colored pool quartz was utilized as a unique method to create colorful murals atop the parking garages. GPS surveying was used to draw the outlines of each mural and indicate the color transitions within the coating. Then, Chamberlin crews applied the different colors of coating to the correct areas, careful to stay within the lines and form the correct shapes using a literal paint-by-numbers approach. The result was a mural depicting aerial landscape views from the countries in which the end-user client operates around the world.
The Excellence in Construction awards program is the industry’s leading competition, developed to honor innovative and high-quality merit shop construction projects, with an Eagle Award presented to the top project in each category. The award honors all construction team members, including the contractor, owner, architect and engineer. The winning projects, selected from entries submitted from across the nation, were judged on complexity, attractiveness, unique challenges overcome, completion time, workmanship, innovation, safety and cost.
A panel of industry experts served as the competition’s judges. This year's panel included representatives from the Design-Build Institute of America, Engineering News-Record, the Construction Users Roundtable, and the National Association of Women in Construction, and representatives from higher education, among others.
